Originally known as Groundswell when they were in their teens, they were a five-piece band that started in 1992, transfoming into the trio known as Three Days Grace in 1997.
From Norwood, Ontario, Canada, many of their songs were inspired by living in a place where the population was around 1500 people. The bandmembers were still in high school when they had their first gig, and they performed anywhere that would accept them — including opening for a movie.
The trio eventually relocated to Toronto, where they were introduced to Gavin Brown, a producer, by their old manager. They played a private set for him and by the time it was over, they were signed onto a contract.
All of them are recovering addicts, and many of their songs have a dual meaning.
Pain
Pain, without love
Pain, I can’t get enough
Pain, I like it rough
‘Cause I’d rather feel pain than nothing at allYou’re sick of feeling numb
You’re not the only one
I’ll take you by the hand
And I’ll show you a world that you can understand
This life is filled with hurt
When happiness doesn’t work
Trust me and take my hand
When the lights go out you will understandPain, without love
Pain, I can’t get enough
Pain, I like it rough
‘Cause I’d rather feel pain than nothing at all
Pain, without love
Pain, I can’t get enough
Pain, I like it rough
‘Cause I’d rather feel pain than nothing at allAnger and agony
Are better than misery
Trust me I’ve got a plan
When the lights go off you will understandPain, without love
Pain, I can’t get enough
Pain, I like it rough
‘Cause I’d rather feel pain than nothing at all
Pain, without love
Pain, I can’t get enough
Pain, I like it rough
‘Cause I’d rather feel pain than nothing
Rather feel painI know (I know I know I know I know)
That you’re wounded
You know (You know you know you know you know)
That I’m here to save you
You know (You know you know you know you know)
I’m always here for you
I know (I know I know I know I know)
That you’ll thank me laterPain, without love
Pain, can’t get enough
Pain, I like it rough
‘Cause I’d rather feel pain than nothing at all
Pain, without love
Pain, I can’t get enough
Pain, I like it rough
‘Cause I’d rather feel pain than nothing at all
Pain, without love
Pain, I can’t get enough
Pain, I like it rough
‘Cause I’d rather feel pain than nothing at all
Rather feel pain than nothing at all
Rather feel pain
