Jumper ~ Third Eye Blind

In Memory of Lance Rogers July 14, 1975 – December 4, 2007

Son-in-Law, friend.  We’ve  missed you.

Third Eye Blind is an American alternative rock band formed in the early 1990s in San Francisco. The band’s current line-up is Stephan Jenkins (vocals, guitar), Brad Hargreaves (drums, percussion), and Tony Fredianelli (guitar, vocals). Leo Kremer, a recent Berkeley graduate, had been filling in for original bassist Arion Salazar, but he will not take part in any recordings with the band.

Jumper

This song is most likely thought to be about a friend of Jenkins’ who committed suicide, as it sounds as if the singer is saying all the things he should have said sooner, because his friend had already died. “He’s on the table and he’s gone to code”, for example, seems to refer to his friend on a hospital bed, and that his lifeline has disappeared. In an interview it was revealed that the song is about a friend of his who was gay, and was criticized after coming out of the closet, and this song was a sort of “talk-down” to prevent his friend from killing himself.

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies, that you’ve been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again, I would understand.
I would understand.

The angry boy,
a bit too insane,
Icing over a secret pain,
You know you don’t belong,
You’re the first to fight,
You’re way too loud,
You’re The flash of light,
on a burial shroud,
I know something’s wrong,
Well everyone I know has got a reason,
to say,
put the past away,
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies,
That you’ve been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again,
I would understand,
I would understand.
And well he’s on the table,
and he’s gone to code,
And I do not think anyone knows,
What they are doing here,
And your friends have left you,
You’ve been dismissed.
I never thought it would come to this,
and I, I want you to know,
Everyone’s got to face down the demons,
Maybe today,
We can put the past away,

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend.
You could cut ties with all the lies,
that you’ve been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again,
I would understand,
I would understand,
I would understand…

(I would understand)
(I would understand)
(Understand)

Ya ya ya ya ya…

Can you put the past away?
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
I would understand
(I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,)
I would understand
(I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,)
And I would understand
(I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,)
I would understand
(I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,)
And I would understand…

About DJ Allyn

DJ Allyn is a burned out radio guy who went on to become a burned out sound engineer for a few Seattle area grunge bands in the 1980s and 1990s. Left the madness of worldwide tours with bands, cleaned up my act and went into the relative sanity of sound engineering for television series. Currently working as the Director of Sound for a television series being filmed in North Vancouver, British Columbia. I am always on the lookout for interesting videos, old music, and fun.
