R. Dean Taylor is a singer, most famous as an recording artist, songwriter, and record producer for Motown Records during the 1960s and 1970s. According to Jason Ankeny, Taylor “remains one of the most underrated acts ever to record under the Motown aegis”. After first proving his mettle as a chart-topping staff songwriter, his own single “Indiana Wants Me” was a Top Five smash in 1970, becoming one of the label’s first major crossover hits performed by a white artist.
Indiana Wants Me
http://djallyn.org/media/indiana_wants_me.flvMmmm, mmmm
Indiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there
I wish I had you, to talk toIf a man ever needed dyin’ he did
No one had the right to say what he said about you
And it’s so cold and lonely here without you
Out there the laws are coming
I’m scared and so tired of runningIndiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there
I wish I had you, to talk toIt hurts to see the man that I’ve become
And to know I’ll never see the morning sunshine on the land
I’ll never see your smiling face, or touch your hand
If just once more I could see
You, our home, and our little babyIndiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there, ohI wish I had you, to talk to
I hope this letter finds its way to you
Forgive me love for the shame I put you through
And all the tears
Hang on love to the memories of those happy years
Red lights are flashin’ around me
Yea love it looks like they found meIndiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there
I wish I had you, to talk toIndiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there
(“This is the police, you are surrounded, give yourself up”)
Indiana wants me, Lord I can’t go back there
(“This is the police, give yourself up, you are surrounded”)

Its always good to see artists trying music styles that aren’t typical to their ethnicity, particularly when its done well, which is definitely the case here for R. Dean Taylor.
