Pepper – Butthole Surfers

The Butthole Surfers, also known as Abe Lincoln’s Bush, Ashtray Babyheads, B.H. Surfers, Dick Clark Five, Ed Asner Is Gay, Fred Astaire’s Asshole, The Right To Eat Fred Astaire’s Asshole, The Unalienable Right To Eat Fred Astaire’s Asshole were founded in 1981 and specialized in punk rock, psychedelia, heavy metal, noise rock, and electronica — sometimes all at once.

There have been many personnel changes since 1981, but the core lineup of Gibby Haynes, Paul Leary, and King Jeffrey Coffey have been together since almost the beginning.

They didn’t get mainstream recognition until John Paul Jones, the bassist for Led Zeppelin started producing them in the early 1990s. Their first breakout album, ElectricLarryLand, reached number 124 on Billboard’s 200 even though it could never be played on the radio due to the original artwork and the obvious problem with the band’s name.

Pepper

“Pepper” opens with The Chorus Guitar riff, (slowed down to half speed).

The song shifts from rap-like verses to sung choruses.

The lyrics of the verses list ten characters and describes how each either dies or escapes a brush with death. Each incident, whether brought about by idiotic recklessness or meaningless bad luck, finds the victim romanced or invigorated by facing death.

The relationship between the lyrics and title is not made clear, nor is the exact connection between the different types of piqued awareness presented in the different sections.

The song also contains the bridge played in reverse. The reversed words are the first and last lines of the chorus: “I don’t mind the sun sometimes; the images it shows; you never know just how you look through other people’s eyes.”

The song itself is about the kids that lead singer, Gibby Haynes went to high school with in Dallas.  The chances they took the carelessness.  The inevitability.

Marky got with Sharon
And Sharon got Cherese
She was sharing Sharon’s outlook
On the topic of disease
Mikey had a facial scar
And Bobby was a racist
They were all in love with dyin’
They were doing it in Texas
Tommy played piano
Like a kid out in the rain
Then he lost his leg in Dallas
He was dancing with a train
They were all in love with dyin’
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

I don’t mind the sun sometimes
The images it shows
I can taste you on my lips
And smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary
And softly spoken lies
You never know just how to look
Through other people’s eyes

Some will die in hot pursuit
In fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

I don’t mind the sun sometimes
The images it shows
I can taste you on my lips
And smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary
And softly spoken lies
You never know just how you look
Through other people’s eyes

Another Mikey took a knife
While arguing in traffic
Flipper died a natural death
He caught a nasty virus
Then there was the ever-present
Football player rapist
They were all in love with dyin’
They were doing it in Texas
Pauly caught a bullet
But it only hit his leg
Well it should have been a better shot
And got him in the head
They were all in love with dyin’
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

I don’t mind the sun sometimes
The images it shows
I can taste you on my lips
And smell you in my clothes
Cinnamon and sugary
And softly spoken lies
You never know just how you look
Through other people’s eyes

About DJ Allyn

DJ Allyn is a burned out radio guy who went on to become a burned out sound engineer for a few Seattle area grunge bands in the 1980s and 1990s. Left the madness of worldwide tours with bands, cleaned up my act and went into the relative sanity of sound engineering for television series. Currently working as the Director of Sound for a television series being filmed in North Vancouver, British Columbia. I am always on the lookout for interesting videos, old music, and fun.
