Glycerine ~ Bush

Bush was a Post-Grunge band from England, formed in 1992, and released their first album, Sixteen Stone in 1994.

They named the band after the place they used to live, Sheperd’s Bush, London. In Canada, they were known as BushX because there was a 1970s band named Bush and they owned the Canadian rights to the name. In 1997, Doomenic Trojano, the leader of the earlier band agreed to let them use the name in exchange for donating $20,000 to the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund.

Sixteen Stone had four hits, “Everything Zen”, “Little Things”, “Comedown”, and “Glycerine”.

Glycerine is probably the most well-known song Bush did — especially the following version that Gavin Rossdale did during a heavy storm at the 1996 MTV Spring Break.

Glycerine

Gavin Rossdale wrote this about his relationship with his girlfriend, Jasmine Lewis.  Glycerine is a chemical used in perfumes and medicines and also to preserve food. The title comes from the explosive applications of glycerine to stabilize nitro: in an interview Rossdale said the song was about how love was like a bomb.

The Beatles song “Strawberry Fields Forever” is referenced in the line, “We live in a wheel where everyone steals, but when we rise it’s like strawberry fields.” Bush loved The Beatles and it was John Lennon and Paul McCartney who inspired them to form a band.

It Must be your skin that I’m sinking in
It Must be for real ’cause now I can feel
And I didn’t mind it’s not my kind
It’s not my time to wonder why
Everything’s gone white
And everything’s grey
Now you’re here now you’re away
I don’t want this
Remember that
I’ll never forget where you’re at
Don’t let the days go by
Glycerine
Glycerine

I’m never alone
I’m alone all the time
Are you at one
Or do you lie
We live in a wheel
Where everyone steals
But when we rise it’s like strawberry fields
I treated you bad
You bruise my face
Couldn’t love you more
You got a beautiful taste
Don’t let the days go by
Could have been easier on you
I couldn’t change though I wanted to
Should have been easier by three
Our old friend fear and you and me
Glycerine
Glycerine
Don’t let the days go by
Glycerine
Don’t let the days go by
Glycerine
Oh, Glycerine!

Bad moon white again
Bad moon white again
As she falls around me

I needed you more
When we wanted us less
I could not kiss just regress
It might just be me
Clear simple and plain
That’s just fine
That’s just one of my names
Don’t let the days go by
Could have been easier on (you)
Glycerine

About DJ Allyn

DJ Allyn is a burned out radio guy who went on to become a burned out sound engineer for a few Seattle area grunge bands in the 1980s and 1990s. Left the madness of worldwide tours with bands, cleaned up my act and went into the relative sanity of sound engineering for television series. Currently working as the Director of Sound for a television series being filmed in North Vancouver, British Columbia. I am always on the lookout for interesting videos, old music, and fun.
