Hash Pipe ~ Weezer

Weezer is a Grammy nominated American rock band from Los Angeles, California formed in 1992 by Rivers Cuomo (lead vocals, guitar), Patrick Wilson (drums, backing vocals), Matt Sharp (bass, backing vocals), and Jason Cropper (guitar, backing vocals), with the last two replaced by Mikey Welsh and Brian Bell, respectively. Mikey Welsh was later replaced with Scott Shriner.

Many modern bands such as Ash, Jimmy Eat World, Fountains of Wayne, Dashboard Confessional, The Ataris, Ozma, Ultimate Fakebook, The Used, Hellogoodbye, Relient K, Bloodhound Gang, The All-American Rejects, Good Charlotte, The Pink Spiders, The Academy Is…,  Say Anything, Yellowcard,  Biffy Clyro,  Something Corporate,  The Stereo,  The Fall of Troy, Nerf Herder,  Hoobastank,  The Anniversary, Saves the Day, Rye Coalition, Tera Melos, Thursday, The Get Up Kids, Motion City Soundtrack, Stella-Nova,  and Ludo  have been compared to Weezer or named them as an influence.

Weezer themselves have listed several influences, among them KISS (with direct references in the song, “In the Garage”), Cheap Trick, Nirvana (who was their labelmate for a very brief time before Kurt Cobain’s death), and Pixies (especially early on in their career). Early Weezer demos, such as “Paperface”, have very obvious ties musically to the Pixies and Nirvana. Also, the song, “Susanne” originally read, “Even Kurt Cobain…”, instead of “Even Izzy, Slash…”, changed after Cobain’s death. There is also a direct reference to “Nevermind” in “Heart Songs”, a track found on the “Red Album”. As a side project, Weezer also briefly played Nirvana and Oasis covers under the stage moniker “Goat Punishment”. In 1998, Weezer covered “Velouria” by the Pixies for a Pixies tribute album, and in 2005 briefly got to tour with their idols for a few dates. Green Day has also been said to be an influence (there is a direct lyric about Green Day in the song, “El Scorcho”), and it has been acknowledged that the two bands are friends with one another and enjoy each other’s music. Weezer also contributed the song “Worry Rock” to “Different Shade Of Green: A Green Day Tribute”.

Hash Pipe

I can’t help my feelings;
I’ll go out of my mind.
These players come to get me
‘Cause they’d like my behind.
I can’t love my business,
If I can’t get a trick.
Down on Santa Monica,
Where tricks are for kids.

Oh, come on and kick me.
Oh, come on and kick me.
(Oh.) Come on and kick me.
(Oh.) You’ve got your problems;
(Oh.) I’ve got my ass wipe
(Oh.) You’ve got your big G’s;
I’ve got my hash pipe.
ehh!
I can’t help my boogies;
They get out of control.
I know that you don’t care
But I want you to know.
The knee-stocking flavor
Is a favorite treat
Of men that don’t bother
With the taste of a teat.

Oh, come on and kick me.
Oh, come on and kick me.
(Oh.) Come on and kick me.
(Oh.) You’ve got your problems;
(Oh.) I’ve got my ass wipe
(Oh.) You’ve got your big G’s;
I’ve got my hash pipe.
i’ve got my hash pipe
ehh!
Oh, come on and kick me.
Oh, come on and kick me.
(Oh.) Come on and kick me.
(Oh.) You’ve got your problems;
(Oh.) I’ve got my ass wipe.
(Oh.) You’ve got your big G’s;
I’ve got my hash pipe.
I’ve got my hash pipe.
ehh!
I’ve got my hash pipe.
ehh!
I’ve got my hash pipe.

About DJ Allyn

DJ Allyn is a burned out radio guy who went on to become a burned out sound engineer for a few Seattle area grunge bands in the 1980s and 1990s. Left the madness of worldwide tours with bands, cleaned up my act and went into the relative sanity of sound engineering for television series. Currently working as the Director of Sound for a television series being filmed in North Vancouver, British Columbia. I am always on the lookout for interesting videos, old music, and fun.
