My Generation ~ The Who

My Generation ~ The Who

The Who are an English rock band formed in 1964. The primary lineup consisted of guitarist Pete Townshend, vocalist Roger Daltrey, bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon. The band reached international success, became known for their energetic live performances, are regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s and ’70s, and recognized as one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time.

The Who rose to fame in the United Kingdom with a pioneering instrument destruction stage show, as well as a series of top ten hit singles (including the celebrated “My Generation”) and top five albums, beginning in 1965 with “I Can’t Explain”. They first hit the top ten in the USA in 1967 with “I Can See for Miles”. The 1969 release of Tommy was the first in a series of top five albums for the group in the USA, followed by Live at Leeds (1970), Who’s Next (1971), Quadrophenia (1973), and Who Are You (1978) among others.

Keith Moon died in 1978, after which the band released two more studio albums, the top five Face Dances (1981) and the top ten It’s Hard (1982), with drummer Kenney Jones, before officially disbanding in 1983. They reformed on several occasions to perform at special events such as Live Aid and for reunion tours such as their 25th anniversary tour (1989) and the Quadrophenia revival tours of 1996 and 1997. In 2000, the three surviving original members began to discuss the possibility of recording an album of new material. These plans were delayed following the death of John Entwistle in 2002. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey continue to perform as The Who. In 2006 they released the studio album Endless Wire, which reached the top ten in the UK and US.

My Generation

Townshend reportedly wrote the song on a train and is said to have been inspired by the Queen Mother who is alleged to have had Townshend’s 1935 Packard hearse towed off a street in Belgravia because she was offended by the sight of it during her daily drive through the neighbourhood. Townshend has also credited Mose Allison’s “Young Man Blues” as the inspiration for the song, saying “Without Mose I wouldn’t have written ‘My Generation’.” Townshend told the Rolling Stone magazine in 1985 that “‘My Generation’ was very much about trying to find a place in society”. A competing theory places a young Pete Townshend opposite an old man white washing the shutters of his family home. From the misheard phrase “I hope these dry before it gets cold,” music history was born.

The following is the Who performing in 1967 on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour where they recreated the incident at the Monterey Pop Festival where they originally destroyed their equipment.

Her first venture into the entertainment was on the Canadian children’s television show, You Can’t Do That on Television from 1986 – 1990. Hand In My Pocket

http://djallyn.org/media/Alanis_Morissette-HandInMyPocket.flv

I’m broke but I’m happy
I’m poor but I’m kind
I’m short but I’m healthy, yeah
I’m high but I’m grounded
I’m sane but I’m overwhelmed
I’m lost but I’m hopeful baby
What it all comes down to
Is that everything’s gonna be fine fine fine
’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving a high five
I feel drunk but I’m sober
I’m young and I’m underpaid
I’m tired but I’m working, yeah
I care but I’m restless
I’m here but I’m really gone
I’m wrong and I’m sorry baby

What it all comes down to
Is that everything’s gonna be quite alright
’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket
And what it all comes down to
And what it all comes down to
Is that I haven’t got it all figured out just yet
’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is giving the peace sign
I’m free but I’m focused
I’m green but I’m wise
I’m hard but I’m friendly baby
I’m sad but I’m laughing
I’m brave but I’m chickenshit
I’m sick but I’m pretty baby

And what it all boils down to
Is that no one’s really got it figured out just yet
’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is playing the piano
And what it all comes down to my friends
Is that everything’s just fine fine fine
’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket
And the other one is hailing a taxi cab

Sweet Child O’ Mine ~ Guns n’ Roses

By DJ Allyn on September 28, 2008 at 12:01 am

Sweet Child O’ Mine ~ Guns n’ Roses

Guns N’ Roses is an American rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985. The band, led by frontman and co-founder Axl Rose, has gone through numerous line-up changes and controversies since their formation. The band has released six studio albums, three EPs and one live album during their career.

The group was formed in early 1980’s by Hollywood Rose members Axl Rose (vocals) and Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar), and L.A. Guns members Tracii Guns (lead guitar), Ole Beich (bass) and Rob Gardner (drums). The band created its name by combining two of the group members’ names. A short time later, before Guns N’ Roses even played any gigs, guitarist Tracii Guns quit to reform L.A. Guns. Slash replaced Guns, and Duff McKagan replaced Ole Beich (who only played one show.) Slash had played for Rose and Stradlin during a short stint in Hollywood Rose. The new line-up came together quickly, but after deciding to go on a “tour” from Sacramento, California to Duff’s home town of Seattle, drummer Rob Gardner quit and was replaced by Slash’s close friend Steven Adler. The band, which continued to be called Guns N’ Roses even after the departure of Tracii Guns, established its first stable line up on this so-called “Hell Tour”. In an interview, Slash stated, “That [trip to Seattle] is really what cemented the band” and established its chemistry.

Sweet Child O’ Mine

She’s got a smile that it seems to me
Reminds me of childhood memories
Where everything
Was as fresh as the bright blue sky
Now and then when I see her face
she takes me away to that special place
And if I stare too long
I’d probably break down and cry

woah oh oh
Sweet child o’ mine
woah oh oh oh
Sweet love of mine

(short guitar solo)

She’s got eyes of the bluest skies
As if they thought of rain
I hate to look into those eyes
And see an ounce of pain
Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place
Where as a child I’d hide
And pray for the thunder
And the rain
To quietly pass me by

woah oh oh
Sweet child o’ mine
woah oh oh oh
Sweet love of mine

(short guitar solo)

woah oh oh oh
Sweet child o’ mine
woah oh oh
Sweet love of mine

woah oh oh oh
Sweet child o’ mine
woah oh oh
Sweet love of mine

(guitar solo)

Where do we go
Where do we go now
Where do we go
Where do we go

Where do we go now
Where do we go now
Where do we go
Sweet child o’ mine
o Where do we go now
ah ah aiai ai ai
Where do we go now
Where do we go

Where do we go now
Where do we go now
where do we go
where do we go now
now now now now now now now
sweet child
sweet child of mine

Superstar ~ Carpenters

By DJ Allyn on September 27, 2008 at 2:52 pm

Superstar ~ Carpenters

The Carpenters were a vocal and instrumental duo, consisting of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter. Though often referred to by the public as “The Carpenters”, the duo’s official name on authorized recordings and press materials is simply “Carpenters”. During a period in the 1970s when louder and wilder rock was in great demand, Richard and Karen produced a distinctively soft musical style that made them one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

Superstar

Occasionally, the Carpenters return home early enough from the recording studio or concert dates to catch Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. One evening as Richard was watching the show, a female singer with a Mae West strut was going to perform a love song of today about a groupie. It was Bette Midler singing Superstar. Again, Richard heard the song as a totally different musical conception in his mind and was excited by its potential.

Accounts of the origin of “Groupie (Superstar)” vary somewhat, but the song grew out of the late 1969/early 1970 nexus of English and American musicians known as Delaney, Bonnie, & Friends that involved Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, Leon Russell, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Rita Coolidge, and various others. The song’s working title during portions of its development was “Groupie Song”.

In its first recorded incarnation, the song was called “Groupie (Superstar)”, and was recorded and released as the B-Side to the Delaney & Bonnie single “Comin’ Home” in December 1969. Released by Atlantic Records,, the full credit on the single was to Delaney & Bonnie and Friends Featuring Eric Clapton.

Long ago, and, oh, so far away
I fell in love with you before the second show.
Your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear, but you’re not really here.
It’s just the radio.

Don’t you remember you told me you loved me baby?
You said you’d be coming back this way again baby.
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby.
I love you, I really do.

Loneliness is such a sad affair, and I can hardly wait to be with you again.
What to say, to make you come again?
Come back to me again, and play your sad guitar.

All Along the Watchtower ~ Bob Dylan

By DJ Allyn on September 26, 2008 at 12:01 am

All Along the Watchtower ~ Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter, author, poet, and disc jockey who has been a major figure in popular music for five decades. Much of Dylan’s most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when he became an informal chronicler and a reluctant figurehead of American unrest. A number of his songs, such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changin’”, became anthems of the anti-war and civil rights movements.

Dylan’s early lyrics incorporated politics, social commentary, philosophy and literary influences, defying existing pop music conventions and appealing widely to the counterculture. While expanding and personalizing musical styles, he has shown steadfast devotion to many traditions of American song, from folk and country/blues to gospel, rock and roll and rockabilly, to English, Scottish and Irish folk music, and even jazz and swing.

All Along the Watchtower

This was the original version before Jimi Hendrix made it famous.

http://djallyn.org/media/bob_dylan-all_along_the_watchtower.flv

“There must be some way out of here,” said the joker to the thief,
“There’s too much confusion, I can’t get no relief.
Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth,
None of them along the line know what any of it is worth.”

“No reason to get excited,” the thief, he kindly spoke,
“There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we’ve been through that, and this is not our fate,
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.”

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.
