Eventually, Cake signed a deal with Capricorn records, who in turn released the album nationally. Some time after this deal Gabe Nelson and Frank French left the band.

Never There

The lyrics are from the viewpoint of a lover who is frustrated that, while his beloved claims to love him back, her actions indicate that she does not really care about him.

I need your arms around me, I need to feel your touch
I need your understanding, I need your love so much
You tell me that you love me so, you tell me that you care
But when I need you baby, you’re never there

On the phone long, long distance
Always through such strong resistance
First you say you’re too busy
I wonder if you even miss me

Never there
You’re never there
You’re never, ever, ever, ever there

A golden bird that flies away, a candles fickle flame
To think I held you yesterday, your love was just a game
A golden bird that flies away, a candles fickle flame
To think I held you yesterday, your love was just a game

You tell me that you love me so, you tell me that you care
But when I need you baby
Take the time to get to know me
If you want me why cant you just show me
Were always on this roller coaster
If you want me why cant you get closer?

Never there
You’re never there
You’re never ever ever ever there

Short Skirt, Long Jacket

I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what’s best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes
I want a girl with the right allocations
who is fast and thorough and sharp as a tack,
She is playing with her jewelry, she is putting up her hair
She is touring the facility
and picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a
looooong jacket

I want a girl who gets up early
I want a girl who stays up late
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity
Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass
She is fast, thorough and sharp as a tack,
She is touring the facility and picking up slack
I want a girl with a short skirt and a looooong,
looooong jacket

Nananananananananananananananananana

I want a girl with smooth liquidation
I want a girl with good dividends
At Citi Bank we will meet accidently
We will start to talk when she borrows my pen
She wants a car with a cup holder armrest
She wants a car that will get her there
She is changing her name from Kitty to Karen
She is trading her MG for a white, Chrysler LeBaron
I want a girl with a short skirt and a
looooong jacket

Long Time

It’s been a long time,
Since I’ve seen your smiling face.
It’s been a long time,
Since I’ve seen a su-u-u-u-u-u-unny day.

It’s been a long time,
Since you wore your pillbox hat.
It’s been a long time,
Since we drove your Po-o-o-o-o-o-ontiac.

It’s been a long time,
Since you gave me bu-u-u-u-u-u-u-utterflies
It’s been a long time,
Since I’ve seen it bu-u-u-u-u-u-urning in your eyes.

But I don’t mind (I don’t mind),
No I don’t (I don’t mind),
No I don’t (I don’t mind),
When I’ve got you next to me.

It’s been a long time,
Since we tripped into this ditch.
It’s been a long time,
Since we drank the ar-r-r-r-r-r-rsenic

It’s been a long time,
Since we’ve been insi-i-i-i-i-i-ide of this tomb.
It’s been a long time,
Since you wore your e-e-e-e-e-expensive French perfume.

But I don’t mind (I don’t mind),
No I don’t (I don’t mind),
But I don’t (I don’t mind),
When I’ve got you next to me.
Next to me

It’s been a long time,
Since I’ve seen your smiling face.
It’s been a long time,
Since I’ve seen a su-u-u-u-u-u-unny day.
