Came Back Haunted

“Came Back Haunted” is a single by American industrial rock act Nine Inch Nails, from their upcoming album, Hesitation Marks. It is the band’s first single since signing with Columbia Records.

The song contains layered synthesizer parts, rhythmic industrial patterns, and an electronic bassline, which are interrupted by a guitar-driven instrumental break. The song ends with a vocal outro with a chant of the song’s title. Gary Graff of Billboard interpreted the song’s lyrics as an “acknowledgement of Reznor’s absence” and a presumable reference to his experiences in film scoring and How to Destroy Angels.

The song first leaked online on Brazilian website BCharts, then spreading to other sites and radios. It was later streamed on the band’s official Soundcloud account. The audio-only video was also uploaded to Nine Inch Nails’ Youtube channel. A radio edit of the song was initially made available, which was edited down to 3:56 in length.

The music video was released on June 28, 2013, with an epileptic seizure warning. It was directed by David Lynch, with whom Reznor collaborated on Lost Highway. The video goes on for 4:17. Photographs taken by Nine Inch Nails collaborator Rob Sheridan during the shooting in Los Angeles were also released on June 27, 2013.

The following video is the full, explicit version of the song on a video made by WithBleedThroughTeeth on YouTube.

Came Back Haunted – Trent Reznor

Ha-ha-haunted

The throat is deep and the mouth is wide
Saw some things on the other side
Made me promise to never tell
But you know me, I can’t help myself

Now I’ve got something you have to see
They put something inside of me
The smile is red and its eyes are black
I don’t think I’ll be coming back

I don’t believe it
I had to see it
I came back haunted
I came back haunted

I said goodbye but I
I had to try
I came back haunted
C-c-c-came back haunted

Everywhere now reminding me
I am not who I used to be
I’m afraid this has just begun
Consequences for what I’ve done, yeah

I don’t believe it
I had to see it
I came back, I came back haunted
C-c-c-came back haunted

I said goodbye but I
I had to try
I came back, I came back haunted
I c-c-c-came back haunted

I don’t believe it
I had to see it
I came back, I came back haunted
C-c-c-came back haunted

I said goodbye but I
I had to try
I came back, I came back haunted
C-c-c-came back haunted

They tried to tell me but I
I couldn’t stop myself and I
I came back, I came back haunted
C-c-c-came back haunted

Just can’t
Stop
Came back ha-ha-haunted
Came back ha-ha-haunted
Came back ha-ha-haunted
Came back ha-ha-haunted
Came back ha-ha-haunted
Came back ha-ha-haunted
Came back ha-ha-haunted
Came back ha-ha-haunted
Came back ha-ha-haunted

Just can’t
Stop

Head Like a Hole

Trent Reznor wrote “Head Like a Hole” in 1988, after touring with Skinny Puppy. Flood, Adrian Sherwood, and Keith LeBlanc were co-producers of the song, and it was recorded in 1989.

The title of the song comes from a sample of a Ministry concert in 1987, which Reznor recorded on a video tape camera and later used in the song’s production.  The name of his project, Nine Inch Nails, which according to Reznor has no “literal meaning”,  was also taken from the same tape, during a portion where Al Jourgensen compares Ministry to a man with a tall nail hammered into his head, creating a hole there:

“Listening to Ministry is like having a nine inch nail hammered into your head like a hole.”

Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.

God money i’ll do anything for you.
God money just tell me what you want me to.
God money nail me up against the wall.
God money don’t want everything he wants it all.
No you can’t take it
No you can’t take it
No you can’t take that away from me
No you can’t take it
No you can’t take it
No you can’t take that away from me

Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I’d rather die than give you control.
Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I’d rather die than give you control.

Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.

God money’s not looking for the cure.
God money’s not concerned with the sick among the pure.
God money let’s go dancing on the backs of the bruised.
God money’s not one to choose
No you can’t take it
No you can’t take it
No you can’t take that away from me
No you can’t take it
No you can’t take it
No you can’t take that away from me

Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I’d rather die than give you control.
Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I’d rather die than give you control.

Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.

Head like a hole.
Black as your soul.
I’d rather die than give you control.
Head like a hole.
Black asyour soul.
I’d rather die than give you control.

Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.
Bow down before the one you serve.
You’re going to get what you deserve.
You know who you are.

Closer

Closer” (also known as Halo 9) is a song written by Trent Reznor and featured on the 1994 Nine Inch Nails album The Downward Spiral. In mid-1994, the song was released as the second single from the album. Most versions of the single are titled “Closer to God,” a rare example in music of a single’s title differing from the title of its A-Side. (“Closer to God” is also the title of an alternate version of “Closer” featured on the single.) This single is numbered as Halo Nine under Nine Inch Nails’ system of Halo numbers. In spite of the blunt and profane sexual content contained in the song’s lyrics (the chorus infamously begins with the couplet “I wanna fuck you like an animal/ I wanna feel you from the inside”), “Closer” became Nine Inch Nails’ biggest hit up to that time, cemented Reznor’s status as an industrial rock superstar, and remains arguably his best-known song. Heavily censored versions of the song and its equally explicit and controversial music video.

You let me violate you
You let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you
You let me complicate you
(Help me…)
I broke apart my insides
(Help me…)
I’ve got no soul to tell
(Help me…)
The only thing that works for me
Help me get away from myself,

I wanna fuck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God

You can have my isolation
You can have the hate that it brings
You can have my absence of faith
You can have my everything

(Help me…)
You tear down my reason
(Help me…)
It’s your sex I can smell
(Help me…)
You make me perfect
Help me become somebody else

I wanna fuck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God

Through every forest
Above the trees
Within my stomach
Scraped off my knees
I drink the honey, inside your hive…
You are the reason I stay alive…

The Hand That Feeds ~ Nine Inch Nails

The Hand That Feeds

Nine Inch Nails was scheduled to perform at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards, but withdrew from the show due to a disagreement with the network over the use of an unaltered image of George W. Bush as a backdrop to the band’s performance of “The Hand that Feeds”. Soon afterwards, Reznor wrote on the official NIN website: “apparently, the image of our president is as offensive to MTV as it is to me.” MTV replied that it respected Reznor’s point of view, but was “uncomfortable” with the performance being “built around partisan political statements”. A performance by the Foo Fighters replaced NIN’s time slot on the show.

In 2006, after being alerted by a fan website, Reznor issued a cease and desist to Fox News Channel for using three songs from The Fragile on air without permission. The songs “La Mer”, “The Great Below”, and “The Mark Has Been Made” appeared in an episode of War Stories with Oliver North detailing the battle of Iwo Jima. A post appeared on Reznor’s blog, which read: “Thanks for the Fox News heads-up. A cease and desist has been issued. FUCK Fox Fucking News.”

You’re keeping in step
In the line
Got your chin held high and you feel just fine
Because you do
What you’re told
But inside your heart it is black and it’s hollow and it’s cold

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?

What if this whole crusade’s
A charade
And behind it all there’s a price to be paid
For the blood
On which we dine
Justified in the name of the holy and the divine

Just how deep do you believe?
Will you bite the hand that feeds?
Will you chew until it bleeds?
Can you get up off your knees?
Are you brave enough to see?
Do you want to change it?

So naive
I keep holding on to what I want to believe
I can see
But I keep holding on and on and on and on

Will you bite the hand that feeds you?
Will you stay down on your knees?
Will you stay down on your knees?
Will you stay down on your knees?
Will you stay down on your knees?
Will you stay down on your knees?
Will you stay down on your knees?
Will you stay down on your knees?
Will you stay down on your knees?
