By The Way – Red Hot Chili Peppers

red hot chili peppersOriginally named Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were formed by Fairfax High School alumni Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons, and Michael “Flea” Balzary following what was supposed to be a one time performance in 1983. As Slovak was already committed to another group, What Is This?, the foursome never intended to become part of the Los Angeles punk scene. Their first performance was at the Rhythm Lounge, to a crowd of roughly 30 people. One song had been created for the occasion, which involved the band improvising music while Kiedis rapped a poem he had written called “Out in L.A.”. The performance was so lively the band were asked to return the following week. Due to this unexpected success, the members changed the band’s name to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, playing several more shows at various LA clubs and musical venues.

Standing in line to see the show tonight,
And there’s a light on,
Heavy glow.
By the way I tried to say I’d be there,
Waiting for.
Dani the girl is singing songs to me,
Beneath the marquee,
Overload.

Steak knife.
Card Shark.
Con job.
Boot cut.

Skin that flick, she’s such a little DJ.
Get there quick by street but not the freeway.
Turn that trick to make a little leeway.
Beat that nic but not the way that we play.

Dog town.
Blood bath.
Rib cage.
Soft tail.

Standing in line to see the show tonight,
And there’s a light on,
Heavy glow.
By the way I tried to say I’d be there,
Waiting for.

Black jack.
Dope dick.
Pawn shop.
Quick pick.

Kiss that dyke, I know you want to hold one.
Not on strike, but I’m about to bowl one.
Bite that mic, I know you never stole one.
Girls that like a story so I told one.

Song bird.
Main line.
Cash back.
Hard top.

Standing in line to see the show tonight,
And there’s a light on,
Heavy glow.
By the way I tried to say I’d be there,
Waiting for.
Dani the girl is singing songs to me,
Beneath the marquee… of her soul.

By the way I tried to say I’d be there,
Waiting for.

Ooh ahh, ‘guess you never meant it
Ooh ahh, ‘guess you never meant it
Ooh ahh, ‘guess you never meant it
Ooh ahh, ‘guess you never meant it
Ooh ahh, ‘guess you never meant it
Ooh ahh, ‘guess you never meant it
Ooh ahh, ‘guess you never meant it
Ohh ahh.

Standing in line to see the show tonight,
And there’s a light on,
Heavy glow.
By the way I tried to say I’d be there,
Waiting for.
Dani the girl is singing songs to me,
Beneath the marquee,
Of her soul.
By the way I tried to say i know you,
From before
Standing in line to see the show tonight,
And there’s a light on,
Heavy glow.
By the way I tried to say I’d be there,
Waiting for.

Soul to Squeeze

Soul to Squeeze” is a song by the American alternative rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers that was originally recorded during the production of their fifth studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik (1991). Although it was not featured on the record—and compiled as a b-side to “Under the Bridge”—”Soul to Squeeze” was later released as a single in 1993 to coincide with its inclusion on the Coneheads film soundtrack.

I’ve got a bad disease
But from my brain is where I bleed.
Insanity it seems
Has got me by my soul to squeeze.

Well all the love from thee
With all the dying trees I scream.
The angels in my dreams (yeah)
Have turned to demons of greed that’s mean.

Chorus:
Where I go I just don’t know
I got to got to gotta take it slow.
When I find my piece of mind
I’m gonna give you some of my good time.

Today love smiled on me.
It took away my face say please
All that you had to free
You gotta let it be oh yeah.

Where I go I just don’t know
I got to got to gotta take it slow.
When I find my piece of mind
I’m gonna give you some of my good time.

Oh, so polite indeed
Well I got everything I need.
Oh make my days a breeze
And take away my self destruction.

It’s bitter baby,
And it’s very sweet.
I’m on a rollercoaster,
but I’m on my feet.
Take me to the river,
Let me on your shore.
I’ll be coming back baby,
I’ll be coming back for more.

Doo doo doo doo dingle zing a dong bone
Ba-di ba-da ba-zumba crunga cong gone bad

I could not forget
But I will not endeavor
Simple pleasures aren’t as special
But I wont regret it never.

Where I go I just don’t know
I got to got to gotta take it slow.
When I find my piece of mind
I’m gonna give you some of my good time.

Where I go I just don’t know
I might end up somewhere in Mexico.
When I find my piece of mind
I’m gonna keep you for the end of time.

Otherside

Off of their 2000Californication album, Otherside also confronts the battles that ex-junkies have with their prior addictions.

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don’t
I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

I heard your voice through a photograph
I thought it up it brought up the past
Once you know you can never go back
I’ve got to take it on the otherside

Centuries are what it meant to me
A cemetery where I marry the sea
Stranger things could never change my mind
I’ve got to take it on the otherside
Take it on the otherside
Take it on the otherside
Take it on
Take it on

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don’t
I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

Pour my life into a paper cup
The ashtray’s full and I’m spillin’ my guts
She wants to know am I still a slut
I’ve got to take it on the otherside

Scarlet starlet and she’s in my bed
A candidate for my soul mate bled
Push the trigger and pull the thread
I’ve got to take it on the otherside
Take it on the otherside
Take it on the otherside
Take it on
Take it on

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don’t
I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

Turn me on take me for a hard ride
Burn me out leave me on the otherside
I yell and tell it that
It’s not my friend
I tear it down I tear it down
And then it’s born again

How long how long will I slide
Separate my side I don’t
I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

How long I don’t believe it’s bad
Slit my throat
It’s all I ever

Under the Bridge ~ Red Hot Chili Peppers

Under the Bridge ~ Red Hot Chili Peppers

Originally named Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were formed by Fairfax High School alumni Anthony Kiedis, Hillel Slovak, Jack Irons, and Michael “Flea” Balzary following what was supposed to be a one time performance in 1983.

Under the Bridge

This was their second hit off of their 1991 breakout album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

It almost never became a song in the first place, because the lyrics and nature of the song made Anthony Kiedis reluctant to show it to producer Rick Rubin and also to record it. The song is about Anthony’s addiction to heroin, and about how he used to shoot up under the downtown bridge. It is also how he has been able to fight that addiction.

Ruben thought the song was beautiful and talked a reluctant Kiedis into sharing it with the band. After singing it to guitarist John Frusciante and bassist Flea, Kiedis recalls that they “got up and walked over to their instruments and started finding the beat and guitar chords to match it.”

Sometimes I feel
Like I don’t have a partner
Sometimes I feel
Like my only friend
Is the city I live in
The city of angels
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I drive on her streets
‘Cause she’s my companion
I walk through her hills
And she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds
And she kisses me windy
I never worry
Now that is a lie

I don’t ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don’t ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

It’s hard to believe
That there’s nobody out there
It’s hard to believe
That I’m all alone
At least I have her love
The city she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I don’t ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all that way
I don’t ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

Under the bridge downtown
Is where I drew some blood
Under the bridge downtown
I could not get enough
Under the bridge downtown
Forgot about my love
Under the bridge downtown
I gave my life away
