Artist: Ted Nugent

Stranglehold ~ Ted Nugent

Ted Nugent is an American hard rock guitarist and vocalist from Detroit, Michigan. He originally gained fame as the lead guitarist of The Amboy Dukes. He is also noted for his conservative political views and his vocal pro-hunting, pro-conservation, Second Amendment and anti-drug/alcohol abuse activism.

Nugent dropped the band name and signed to Epic Records in 1975, with Derek St. Holmes (guitar, vocals), Rob Grange (bass), and Clifford Davies (drums). This workforce was the backing band for many of his classic 1970s albums. Nugent’s solo career was most successful when he released hits such as “Cat Scratch Fever” and “Stranglehold.” This band toured extensively until its breakup in 1978 when St. Holmes and Grange departed. St. Holmes was replaced by Charlie Huhn and Grange by Dave Kiswiney. Davies finally left around 1982.

During this era, Nugent was notable for his frequent declarations that he did not drink alcoholic beverages or smoke tobacco or marijuana. In an interview for VH1′s Behind The Music, Nugent stated the reason behind this was due to his father having sternly reprimanded him when he came home smelling of alcohol after a night of drinking. This was an unusual stance for a major rock performer of the ’70s, and Nugent has been cited as an important early influence on the straight edge movement that similarly disavows drinking and recreational drug use.

Stranglehold

Stranglehold” is a single and the first track from Ted Nugent’s self-titled 1975 album. The vocals are performed not by Nugent, but by Derek St. Holmes.   It has been ranked 31st greatest guitar solo of all time by Guitar World.

Here I come again now baby
Like a dog in heat
Tell it’s me by the way now baby
I like to tap the streets

Now I’ve been smoking for so long
You know I’m here to stay
Got you in a stranglehold baby
You best get out of the way

Gonna cruise is a bitch now baby
You know you can’t do me ’round
If your house gets in my way baby
You know I’ll burn it down

You remember the night that you left me
You put me in my place
Got you in a stranglehold now baby
You better cross your way

Sometimes you wanna get higher
Sometimes you gotta start low
Some people think they gonna die someday
I got news you never got to go old

Come on come on up
Come on come on up
Come on come on up
Come on come on up
Come on come on baby
Come on come on up
Come on come on baby
Come on come on

Gonna cruise is a bitch now baby
You know you can’t do me ’round
If your house gets in my way baby
You know I’ll burn it down

You remember the night that you left me
You put me in my place
Got you in a stranglehold now baby
You better cross your way
